An Alien Hand chapter Summary
The main objectives of the Viking mission to Mars were to find out whether soil samples and samples have been found.
Tillu and his parents lived under our planet under artificial conditions. He was not allowed to surface for two reasons. The air was too thin to breathe and the temperature was too low.
Tillu's father was part of that team. He used to go to work daily through a secret route. But it was a prohibited route for the boy. Tillu was eager to learn about and see the sky. His mother did not let him go.
That day Tillu's father was enjoying a short sleep at home. Tillu managed to get his security card. He went through the prohibited route. The Magic Card helped her open the door. They marched along an upward slope. But he underestimated the security system. Invisible mechanical devices took a picture of him and sent his picture to the Central Bureau. He was soon captured and sent back home.
The father decides to explain everything to the boy. He said that he could survive on the surface because he used oxygen to keep himself warm. His special boot enabled him to walk smoothly. There was a time when their ancestors lived safely and naturally on the surface. But a small change of climate disturbs the balance of nature on that planet. All birds, fish and animals lost their clearance. Only humans managed to survive under artificial conditions underground. They produced electricity from sunlight. The father's job was to surface the machines in working condition.
The next day Tillu's father got a large TV screen crowd. The computer showed something moving towards them from another planet. It was a spacecraft. They wondered who were the strangers in that craft.
The President made an announcement. It was reported that two spacecraft were approaching them. They had to decide how to deal with them. Number one said that they could easily destroy those spacecraft, but it would be unwise. He suggested that they let them land. They were unmanned. They only had the means.
Number two favored the wait and watch policy. They should not disclose their presence. Number three supported the idea.
Then came the news that the first alien spacecraft had landed. Tillu watched the funny thing on the TV screen from the control room. He mentioned some movement in it. A mechanical hand came out and touched the soil. Tillu lost self-control resistance. He pressed the red button. This created excitement. The father restored the red button to its neutral position. The mechanical arm stopped working.
A press conference was held on Earth. A scientist told the press about a sudden defect in the mechanical arm. But it was made to work again. Soil samples were collected. But scientists were in great despair. The Viking mission found no signs of life on Mars.
