Geography Lesson Summary
The poem demonstrates the poet's concern for division and friction between people. The poem begins after the poet sees the city in a jet. He says that everything seems very small from that height. He can see the whole city properly. Furthermore, he finds that the city is not properly planned and is degraded. Thus, it has no particular style.
When the jet reached an altitude of 10,000 feet, he could see that the cities were located near rivers or water resources. He realizes that the availability of water resources is the reason behind the unorganized cities. Cities grew as needed. People settled more near water resources as they require water for almost all activities. He understands that fertile land and water is the key to human existence. Thus, he can see the logical reason for the development of cities.
Drinking water is important for human life. Water is essential for almost all human activities such as agriculture, production, business, transportation, etc. He also now clarifies that the Earth has more water than the land and also that the Earth is round.
Finally, he wonders why people on earth have built walls, borders and fences. The poet says that man has a lot of knowledge about the origin of the Earth, its size, civilizations, cities and nations. But, in this discovery, we have absolutely no idea about how to live peacefully on this wonderful planet. He fails to understand why people hate each other so much. He feels that people are selfish, jealous and narrow minded. Furthermore, he finds that the Earth is one but the people living on it have divided and fragmented it.
He also realizes that the people of the planet are not living in harmony together for shallow reasons. If people forget their differences and decide to live together in peace, this planet will be a wonderful, beautiful and wonderful place to live.
The moral of the poem is that we will use natural resources such as land and water wisely. Furthermore, we will all live together on harmony and not fight with each other on trivial things. In this way, we can make the earth a beautiful place to live.
