The Selfish Giant Summary
The story begins every day with children playing in the giant garden after arriving from school. The garden was lovely, large, with soft grass and fruit trees. Trees eat rich fruits and birds sit on them and sing sweet songs.
Seven years later, Vishal came back one day. He was living with his friend, the Cornish ogre. The children were scared to see him. He saw the children playing and said that he would not let anyone play here as it was his own garden. They built a wall around it and also put up a notice board. The notice board displayed a warning on this, action will be taken on board superintendents'.
The children became depressed because they had no other place to play. They roamed the high walls of the garden and remembered the beautiful garden inside them.
Spring had arrived and there were small birds blooming all around. But it was winter in Vishal's garden and there was frost and snow. Birds did not sing even in the absence of children. Once a flower blossomed from the grass but after looking at the notice board, he too fell back asleep. Then came the northern wind and hail. Due to Vishal's selfishness, even the golden fruits of autumn did not come in his garden.
Then one morning, Vishal heard sweet and lovely music. It was a song outside his window. The hail and the north wind stopped and he could feel the spring. He saw the children come through a small hole in his garden. Children were sitting on tree branches and trees were in bloom. He also saw birds flying and heard them chirping. Flowers had also arrived.
But, to his surprise, there was still winter in one corner. He saw that a young boy was standing there and was not able to reach the branches of the trees. The tree cut its branches but still could not climb.
His heart melts at this scene. He felt that he was very selfish indeed. He decided to place the boy on top of the tree, pull down the walls and allow the children to play here forever. But when the children saw him, they ran away and it was winter again in the garden. However, the little boy did not move because he was crying. Vishal placed it on top of the tree and the tree blossomed in one go. He kissed Vishal.
The other children realize that Vishal is not evil. Vasant comes back with them. Vishal used to play with children but that little boy was nowhere to be seen. As the years passed, he became much weaker. One winter morning, he saw a lovely tree with white flowers in one corner. The branches of the tree were golden and the little boy stood under him.
The boy was injured which made Vishal very angry. He told the boy that he would kill the man who harmed him. The boy told him that these were wounds of love. The boy smiled and asked Vishal to come to his garden. Later, the children found the giant dead under a tree covered with white flowers.
