The Snake and the Mirror summary
The Snake and the Mirror is the story of a doctor who recently began his practice. Hence his earnings were less. He lived in a small rented room - an outhouse - with two windows and a tiled roof. The tiles were supported by gables that rested on the beam and had no electricity. He had only sixty rupees in his bag. Apart from some shirts and dhotis, he had a black coat. The room was affected by mice. However, his dreams and ambitions were to the contrary.
One summer night, he had his meal at the restaurant and returned home. He lit an earthen lamp, took off his coat and shirt and opened both windows. He sat in the chair and took out a medical book to read. There was a large mirror on the table on which a lamp stood. As it was too hot to sleep, and he had nothing better to do, he sat in front of the mirror, staring at himself, praising his look and smile and saying that he had a more present appearance. Should do for He was a great admirer of beauty and believed in making himself beautiful. He also laid great emphasis on the fact that he was unmarried and a doctor. Pleased with his appearance, he decided to shave daily and grow a thin mustache to look more beautiful. The way he decided that this decision was an 'important' one,
Gradually, her thoughts shifted from self-appreciation to planning her future wedding. She wanted to marry a female doctor who had a lot of money and a good medical practice because she did not have either. He wanted a fat wife so that whenever he made a mistake he would run away and his wife could not catch him.
He was so engrossed in his daydreams that he did not attach much importance to the sudden silence. The mice had stopped to falter and there was a sound of something falling behind them. He turned him aside, but before he could glance, a snake slipped from the back of the chair and suffered a bruise on his shoulder. The doctor was extremely frightened as the snake was only a few inches away from his face. Frightened, he sat on the stone side. The snake slipped near his shoulder and hovered around his left arm above the elbow. The doctor felt a crushing force on his arm. Momentarily, the doctor who was so proud of his form and his profession was weakened by fear. He thought that he had various medicines and if the snake bitten him then any one was enough to save him. In this moment of fear of death, he realized that he was only a human being, a poor man, with nothing to boast about.
In this moment, he felt the presence of God near him. In his imagination, he tried to write 'Imagination O God' in bright letters outside his heart. He felt pain in his left arm, where the snake had bitten. He realized that if the snake killed him, he did not even have any medicine in his room. Then he thought that he was a poor, foolish and foolish doctor. In this way, his thoughts changed from calling himself a beautiful, unmarried doctor, to calling himself a poor, foolish and stupid doctor. This sequence of events also added humor to the story.
The moment he accepted his real worth, the gods appeared pleased and his own snake left him and sat down on the table in front of the mirror. The doctor woke up quietly and came out of the door. The next morning when he returned, all his belongings had been secured but for his dirty vest which was too dirty for the thief.
