A Pact with the Sun Summary
Saeeda's mother was not well for long and did not receive proper medical treatment of her complaints. He was treated by various doctors but his improvement was temporary and the disease was fading away. He was denied healthy food, sunshine and fresh air. In addition, she was locked in a small dark and dirty room where the windows were closed and no sunlight reached there.
When her condition worsened and her loved ones asked to consult a specialist, regardless of her high fees. Life is more valuable than anything. Although Saeeda's mother was poor, she heeded his words. He sold his jewelery to pay doctor's fees and medicine. The doctor checked her up and gave her good medicine. He advised her to take a good diet and leave that dark room and live in a large room with windows and doors, sunshine and fresh air.
Everyone in the room started commenting on the doctor's advice. Some were speaking in support of it and others were opposing it. An experienced woman objected to being exposed to the sun to suffer from a severe cough. A neighbor started fighting. Saeeda's mother was not in a position to be part of them all so that she would remain silent. In the end she said whatever the outcome was she was determined to follow the doctor's words. Therefore his bed should be moved to the next room and he should be allowed to sit in the sun for an hour daily.
But now the sky remained cloudy for a few days. He whispered in her mouth and asked God where did he hide the sun?
Saeeda was playing with her mother and he listened to her. Later when she was about to fall in the courtyard, she saw light sun and asked her to run to her mother. But everyone stopped him because it was late evening and it was cold. Frustrated, Saeeda went back to her doll.
The moment we wake up, our body temperature and blood pressure return to normal. Other events such as heart palpitations and breathing also become common and we forget most, if not all, dreams.
Children have a special communicative language in which they talk to trees, flowers, animals, sun and moon, and even God. Using that particular language, Saeeda prayed to the rays of the sun to come tomorrow with more warmth and brightness when her mother was ill.
The sun's light rays answered her prayer and assured her that they would come at a certain time and told her not to be unhappy.
The next day when the bright energetic Sun prepared to come to Earth, the Sun said that they would not go to Earth because the way the Earth was blocked by clouds. Hearing this, Kiran remained silent for a while but one of them talked to her father Surya that he had made a pact with Saeeda as he had promised her. Her mother was not feeling well and needed her help so she would pass through the clouds to reach Saida's courtyard. Otherwise how would his mother have been cured. For this, all the rays were unanimously stacked against the sun. They argued that if they were to return, the people of Earth would have considered them false.
The sun had softened a bit and told them that the clouds were too heavy so they would have to control themselves. He even asked them to take care of their clothes.
The rays moved towards the Earth, saying that they did not pay attention to their clothes because they could always replace them. The clouds blocked their path. The small rays focused on their heat which was enough to make the clouds escape from there. The rays reached the earth, leaving the astonishing clouds behind.
Saeeda saw them arriving and jumped with joy. He calls his mother and tells her that Surya is there. The old lady was in tears of gratitude. Her bed was placed in the sun where she sat for an hour leaning against the pillow. It was after months that she was able to feel the sun and breathe fresh air. She felt as if she had entered a new world. Although she looked weak but there was a glimmer of hope in her face and eyes. He also saw his child in the sun and kissed her. With this new dawn a new hope, a new scent, birds chirping and all this, Saeeda's mother feels better and she is fully overcome with her illness.
