The Hack Driver Summary
This is the story of a lawyer who, after completing his graduation, started working with a well-known firm in the city. He was working there as an assistant clerk. He did not like the work of serving summons because sometimes he had to face harsh conditions. One day, he had to summon Oliver Lutkins, who was an important witness in a case. He lived in a small village, New Mulian. He was happy going to the village but the village seemed very dull and lifeless. The narrator saw a hack driver on a stage who was cheerful. They interrogate him about Lutkins and find out that he was a clever man and that he had taken a loan from many people. The hack driver cleverly told the lawyer that he had come here to summon Lukin to court.
The lawyer decided to search for Bill's hack and Lutkins. Bill molested the lawyer and sent him to different locations in search of Lutkins. He always goes ahead and asks about Lutkins. They went to catch Lutkins at Fritz's shop where he used to play poker. He is told that he has gone to Gustaf Barber for shaving. Later they could not meet him at Gustaf's place and someone told him that they saw him in the pool room. They could not find him there and said that after buying cigarettes he left the poolroom. In the afternoon Bill asked the lawyer to buy food from his wife because it would be less expensive than a restaurant. They had their lunch at Wade's Hill which is a beautiful place.
By now the lawyers were fully convinced that Bill was a generous and helpful person. Even he started comparing the people and villagers of the city. Later they went to the house of Lutkins mother but she was a terrible woman and she was close to attacking them with hot rod. Finally, the lawyer has to leave without service to summon Lukins. He was badly scolded the next day by his Chief and sent to New Mullion again with a colleague who knew Lutkins. Upon arriving at the station, the lawyer happily acknowledged that he had such helpful people in his search for Bill Lutkins. At this point, he was told by his colleague that the hack driver was none other than Oliver Lutkins. The lawyer felt ashamed of himself.
