The Last Leaf Summary
Sharad tells the background of this story to Soo and Jonsey, two young artists who share a flat on the third floor of an old house. It is the month of November and Johncie is ill with pneumonia: she stays in bed all day, peeping out the window. Sue is worried and calls a doctor for help. Even with medical treatment, Johnsey's condition has not improved.
One day, the doctor informs Suu that the drugs cannot help Johny as the latter does not want to live. The lawsuit makes several attempts to divert Johnsey's attention, but nothing works. Soo then brought his drawing board to Johnny's room and began painting there.
She suddenly hears Johncy whispering something. She runs towards Johnny and realizes that Johnny is counting backwards while peeping out the window. Soo learns that Johnny is looking outside his window at an old ivy that is shedding its leaves. Johncie is counting his remaining leaves. Johnsey says that in just three days, the number of leaves has fallen from about a hundred to just five. Johncie is sure that when the tree sheds its last leaf, it will die.
Johnsey tells Sue that he wants to see the last leaf fall. Sue says that she cannot draw the curtain because she needs lights to paint. But she asks Johnny not to look out of the window. Johnsi promises not to do so, but asks Suu to make haste, so that he falls the last leaf and then dies peacefully.
Sue goes to Behraman, a 60-year-old artist living on the ground floor. His dream of portraying the masterpiece is yet to be fulfilled. Sue shares her concerns with him. She tells him that Johncie has a high temperature and he refuses to eat or drink anything. Behrman is surprised at Johnsey's behavior and wants to see him. They go to Johnny's room together and find him sleeping. Sue pulls the curtains and they go to the next room. It is raining heavily and there are cold winds; They see that there is only one leaf left on the ivy tree and it can fall at any time. Behraman quietly returned to his room.
The next day, Johnci tells Soo to draw the curtain. Sue is happy to find that despite the wind and rain, there is not a single leaf left on the tree. Johncie is surprised but is sure that the leaf will fall soon. He wakes up every hour to look out of the window, but finds the leaf sticking out of the tree. It faces another storm that evening.
Johncy gazes on the leaf for a long time. She calls Suu and tells him that the last leaf has made him realize that he is a bad person: for all the love and care that Suu has given him, he does not answer himself to get better and neither Only expressed desire. Leaf shows him that he wants to die. The two friends get a hug and Johnny accepts the soup that Sue gives him. Johncie combed her hair and smiled brightly. That afternoon, the doctor visits and says that ever since Johnny has got the desire to live, she will soon recover. He also informs Suu Kyi that Behraman has pneumonia and has no hope of survival.
The next morning, Soo informs Johnsey that Behraman has died of pneumonia. He was ill for two days. On the first day, the watchman found him on his bed, trembling and wearing wet clothes and shoes. It seems that he went out on a stormy night. A ladder and a burnt lantern were found near his bed with green and yellow paint. Soo tells Johnsee to look out of the window at the last leaf: the leaf that does not flow in the air. She tells Johnny that the last leaf fell on the night Behraman painted this leaf - his masterpiece.
