The Tale of Custard the Dragon summary
The poet states that there was once a little girl named Belinda. She lived in a small white house. She lived with some creatures who were her pets. They are a black kitten, a gray mouse, a yellow dog, a small red wagon and a creature that the poet says was really and truly a dragon.
The poet mentions the names of all the animals that were tailed by Belinda. He says the name of the black kitten is ink. The name of the gray mouse is Blink. The color of the little yellow dog was yellow and so he called it mustard and the dragon which was a coward was weak and was called custard.
The poet descended the dragon with great sharp teeth and spikes on it. This means that its skin was pointed at the top. At the bottom it was scales that were bony plates to protect the skin. Their mouths have been compared to a chimney because it is believed that dragons can release fire from the mouth. Even his nose is compared to a chimney used to expel fumes. His feet are like a sharp knife i.e. dagger.
So, now the poet explains the inner strength or bravery of the various characters of the poem. He says that Belinda was brave like a group of bears and ink and Palak was brave enough to hunt lions. So here they have shown the bravery of a kitten and a small rat, which can also hunt lions. The dog was very brave like an angry tiger. But unlike all of them there was custard. Custard, the dragon was not brave, was so afraid of everything that he always sought a safe cage.
Belinda strokes the dragon in a very cruel manner. Ink, Palak and Mustard compared him to a knight named Perkival, who was believed to be brave, but ran away due to lack of courage. He used to tease the dragon by sitting in his little red cart.
The poet says that Belinda used to laugh so loud that her voice echoed in the house. Blink, the mouse used to laugh and make a sound of pissing. Ink and mustard, on the other hand, used to tease the dragon by asking him his age whenever he asked for a good safe cage.
So, while they were all mocking the python, they heard the sound of someone entering the house. When they looked towards the window, they saw a pirate climbing the wall. The dog barked at him and the kitten bobbed at him. Belinda said oh ooh ', because they were all scared of the pirates (who loot the ships).
The poet has described the presence of pirates. He says that the pirate was holding handcuffs in both his hands and also had a little sword. He was holding his sword with his teeth. He had a black beard and one of his legs was made of wood. This means that although the pirate was a handicapped man he was still terrifying all the other characters. In addition, he intended to harm them.
They all panicked when they saw the pirates. Belinda was so frightened that she became pale due to fear and wept for help. The mustard dog also cried for help. The kitten ran downstream of the ink house as if she had already planned for it. The mouse's ink went into its small mouse hole to protect itself.
When all the other characters who had previously been defined as too brave became frightened, the dragon did the most unexpected thing. He leaped at the pirate and made a loud sound from his nose as if the engine was producing a sound. Not only that, he hit his tail so hard that it caused a heavy sound of metal rubbing against each other in the underground prison. He attacked the pirates like a bandit who attacks the worm.
The pirate was so shocked by the dragon's reaction that he opened his mouth in shock. To garner some strength, he drank some wine from a container in his pocket. After mustering up some courage, he fired two bullets at the dragon but he missed it. The dragon ate this fierce looking pirate every time.
When the pirate was dead, Belinda hugged the dragon and mustard licked it. No one was saddened by the death of the pirates, they were all happy. Both ink and nap were moving around the dragon in happiness. So, here the poet says that all the characters were happy and they were showing their gratitude to the dragon because he saved them.
When he gave thanks and showed his love for the dragon, he changed his mind. They were reminded how they used to make fun of this cowardly dragon and now they were all praising him. So once the dog said that it was just because of some confusion that he was not able to do anything otherwise he would have been twice as brave as a custard. Both Ink and Palak also said that they would be three times braver than the custard. At this, the dragon stated that he fully agreed that they were all more powerful and courageous than him.
Finally, the poet again used the same lines to indicate that after this horrific episode in which the dragon was the protagonist, where all the other characters still underestimated him by saying that they were more powerful than he and the situation. Many could have handled it better, the poet says that life started again in the same way. Belinda still lives in that little white house with ink, eyelid, mustard and custard and they are all very brave while the dragon is still a coward who always wants to be safe in his cage.
