A Legend of the Northland Summary

Northland is an area near the North Pole where the days are shorter because the sun's rays reach for a shorter period of time. Here, during winter, the duration of night is long and the days are short. The word 'they' in line 4 refers to the people living in this area. Also, the poet states that the duration of nights is long and people cannot sleep through them. The poet wants to emphasize the fact that the nights are very long.

This region experiences severe cold conditions as an icy area. In addition, reindeer are animals that live in the polar region, which people use to pull their slopes. Also, the poet states that children look like polar bear cubs because they wear clothes made of bear skin fur. In inline 1 of 3 paras, they refer to 'elders' and 'them' to children. In addition, the elderly tell a strange and interesting story about young people. However, the poet does not believe that the story is true, yet, it gives an important message.

This saga refers to the time when Saint Peter lives and goes around the world, giving spiritual lectures to people like all saints, and then one day an event occurred. While delivering the lecture, one day he reached the door of a hut, where a small woman was making a cake in the chimney. St. Peter was very hungry that day, as he had not taken food and was feeling weak. Therefore, she approaches the women and asks for one of the cakes she has baked.

The women were selfish and did not give them cake from the store. Instead, she bakes a very small cake for St. Peter. She does not want to share her things. However, when she puts the cake to bake, she feels it is too big to give up. Unhappy women then started making a small cake. He did this three times but gave no cake to Saint Peter. That's the reason they looked younger when he ate them. But when he had to give it to them he felt too big to give it to anyone. And finally, he placed all the cakes on the shelf of his kitchen and did not give any cake to the saint.

Saint Peter got angry and cursed him because he was very hungry and felt very weak. The saint told him that you are selfish and do not deserve to live as a human being. He further adds that God has given him food, shelter and fire to keep him warm, but he becomes selfish and greedy. So the women became such a bird, who had to work all day to make their home by boring their house with wood.

When St. Peter cursed her she became a bird and flew off the chimney. When she flew, she had a red hat on her head, which the women wore. Also, when people and children see such a bird in rural areas, their elders tell them this story of the bird.
