The Thief's Story Summary
Anil was a writer for 25 years. He was spending his life very carelessly. He struggled to write to earn money to run his life. One day Anil was watching a wrestling match. He salutes Hari. Hari used his old formula to flatter the person. Anil impresses and promises her that he will teach her how to write, adding numbers and how to cook delicious food. Now both were living together happily.
One day Hari noticed that Anil had brought a bundle of notes. He saw that he placed them under the mattress. As Hari saw the bundle of notes, so his bad feeling arose in his mind. He decides to rob Anil that night. After taking dinner, Anil calmed down and slept. Hari lay on the bed and slipped his hands under the mattress. He took notes and ran away from there. He left for Lucknow from the railway station to board the train. But, he missed. He kept roaming in the markets. It was raining and Hari Singh was completely wet.
He had a duality in his mind. He did not want to betray Anil's trust. In addition, Anil was teaching her how to connect and add numbers that could change her life. So he left the railway station. He came to the ground and sat on the bench. It was raining heavily then. The wind was blowing cold. He felt guilty because he had cheated an innocent person. His shirt and pajamas fell on his body as he was wet due to rain.
Hari Singh had a change of heart. He decided to return to Anil and put the money under the pillow. He reached the room and returned the money. The next morning, he woke up a little late and Anil had already made his tea. Anil offered 50 rupees to Hari Singh saying that he had earned it. He told her that she would now be paid regularly. Hari held the note in his hand. He realized that the notes were soaked by rain last night. Hari came to know that Anil had come to know about his rape, but there was no sadness, anger or guilt in his mind.
