A tiger in the zoo summary
This poem is showing the pathetic condition of the tiger in the zoo. This shows the poor position of the tiger in a cage. In a zoo, the tiger walks into the confined space provided to him in the cage. He can take some steps. He has stripes on his body that are easily noticeable. Its claws are soft like velvet. He makes no noise while walking on his velvet pad. 'Usually the tiger is silent but angry.
The poet suggests that the cage is not a suitable place for a tiger, as it is not its natural habitat. Thus, the caged tiger is a victim of human cruelty. Typically, tigers are found sitting under some bushes or tall grass near certain water bodies. So that the tiger can see its prey as the deer is coming there to drink water, consequently, it can move silently from the grass and kill them. The poet wants to give a message to all mankind that the tiger should be in the jungle and not in a cage.
Furthermore, the poet suggested that the tiger should be sitting on the edge of the forest near the village. It can terrorize people passing through that path, showing its sharp teeth, stopping its claws and causing the horrifying sound of anger.
The poet has deep sympathy due to the unpleasant situation of a tiger imprisoned in a cell made of concrete. The tiger is unable to come out due to the strong bars in the concrete cell. Therefore, the tiger's strength is locked behind bars. All such situations are attracting tigers who are not interested in visitors. And, he keeps staring at the confined space of the cage.
The poet is trying to make people feel about a tiger who is sitting in a cage and feeling unpleasant and restless. Tiger is still not showing any interest in the sound made by patrol cars of zoo officials. The poet shows him staring at the shining stars with his brilliant eyes. The poet is raising a moral issue here and he intends to present a strong case against the cruelty of humans to animals kept in cages.
