Fire and Ice Summary
Someday the poet is very sure about the destruction of humanity. He is talking about two different beliefs about the end of this world. These are based on what people say. The poet says that he is in favor of those who say that this world will end in fire. This is because they have seen the effect and result of uncontrolled and unequal desires on the life of man. He finds that man's evil desires are like fire in his nature. So this fire can become a big reason to destroy mankind and this world too.
On the other hand, second belief in this regard states that even snow is enough to destroy this world. Here the poet compares the nature of snow to feelings of hatred of humans with other humans. Just as ice can numb the body through its long contact, so can hatred numb our minds and thoughts. And so it can make us insensitive and cruel. Such cruelty to humanity would be more responsible for the destruction of the world than at will.
The speaker brings all of us into the middle of an argument between people from two different categories. One who thinks the world will come to a raging end and others who think the world will end. The poet is possibly talking about the literal end of the world. But he is also talking about the power that humans have to destroy each other.
The poet experiences the romantic desire that he has taught passion for feelings such as love and lust. These will probably have the power to turn the Earth into a large fireball. But he has also experienced the other extreme side. It is about cold feelings like hate that have a lot of destructive power. It is a common fact that love gets all the hype, whereas hatred is the silent killer. It may not have the same effect as a fireball, but it will explode.
